7 Effective Home Remedies for Managing Varicose Veins

Are you experiencing cramps, swollen legs, and bulging veins? Do not worry; they can be varicose veins that are common. Thankfully, effective home remedies help you alleviate the symptoms and ease the pain.

Some home remedies associated with lifestyle changes are mentioned below:

1-      Exercise Regularly

Adopt an active lifestyle by exercising regularly, as it helps improve blood circulation. However, avoid anything strenuous. Choose low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, leg elevation, etc. Also, prioritize exercises that activate the calf muscles.

Try standing on the toes and slightly lifting the heels off the ground. Pause for a few seconds, then bring the heels back to the ground.

2-  Wear Compression Stockings

Compression stockings are well-fitted socks used to apply pressure on the veins. This pressure stops the blood from pooling in and helps in circulation. Wear these stockings to ease the pain. You can wear them for the whole day. Just avoid wearing it while sleeping.

Vein experts also advise wearing compression stockings while traveling, especially for long journeys.

3-   Maintain a Healthy Weight

Extra weight adds pressure on the veins, making it difficult to pump blood back to the heart. So, try to maintain a healthy weight. Walk regularly and follow a diet plan. Be mindful of what you are eating. Keep a check on the calorie intake and ensure regular workouts to burn these calories.

4-  Stay Hydrated

Another tip is to stay hydrated. Drink 8-12 glasses of water every day. Dehydration leaves an adverse impact on the vein's health by making the blood thicker. Thick blood is difficult to circulate and prone to blood clots. Apart from it, staying hydrated is also beneficial for the overall health.

5-  Avoid Sitting/Standing for Long Hours

People doing office jobs that require long hours of sitting or standing are more prone to varicose veins. It is because standing/sitting in one direction results in blood pooling that stretches the veins. Due to this, the vein walls become weak and damage occurs in the valves.

6-  Eat More Flavonoids

Flavonoids reduce blood pressure in the arteries and help in blood flow. Thus, blood is less likely to pool in and form clots. Start consuming a flavonoid-rich diet. They are found in fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. Apples, berries, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and grapes are some high-flavonoid fruits and vegetables.

7-   Massage Gently

Massaging helps reduce inflammation and discomfort caused by varicose veins. You can try different essential oils like peppermint, chamomile, helichrysum, cypress, eucalyptus, lavender, etc.

Remember, home remedies are just to reduce swelling and ease pain to some extent. When you have varicose veins, treatment is the only long-term solution.
