Sclerotherapy for varicose veins

Veins are blood vessels in the body that gather de-oxygenated blood and return it to the heart. If these veins get damaged, it affects overall health, leading to various health complications. Treatment for varicose veins includes; Vein Stripping and laser treatment, but among them, Sclerotherapy is the most effective method.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy removes spider and varicose veins from the affected area on the lower part, including the legs, ankles, and feet. It’s a medical technique for the treatment of varicose veins.

The technique includes directly injecting a solution into veins, causing them to scar while pushing blood to reroute toward healthier veins.

Symptoms of varicose veins

Up to 25% of women experience having varicose veins. Some physical symptoms often experienced by the patient are:

  • Bulging, bluish veins
  • Swelling in the leg
  • Aching pain in the legs
  • Feeling heavy in the legs
  • Itching around the affected vein
  • Severe leg cramps during nighttime

Preparations for Sclerotherapy treatment

Before the procedure of Sclerotherapy, the doctors are first needed to perform a detailed physical examination of the affected veins to collect the patient’s entire medical history. Besides that, they will evaluate:

  • Other primary blood vessel diseases
  • Previous medical history
  • Any recent illnesses
  • Medications or supplements if taking any
  • Allergies
What to expect during the sclerotherapy treatment?

For the Sclerotherapy treatment, you will first have to lie down comfortably with your legs slightly raised. Doctors will first disinfect the area that’s needed to be treated with alcohol.

After that, a fine needle will be inserted into the affected vein for inserting a medical solution. It’s a whitish solution needed to irritate the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse. It results in sticking them together and blood clotting. Gradually, the veins will become scar tissue and disappear within time.

For this entire process, anesthesia isn’t required, but the solution sometimes contains a local anesthetic called Lidocaine.

Most of the time, patients experience slight cramps, pain, or burning during the needle insertion in the veins. You may inform your doctor immediately if it gets unbearable.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy treatment

Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective methods for treating varicose and spider veins. The following are some benefits of the sclerotherapy process;

  • The entire process takes less than even an hour, and it doesn’t even require anesthesia
  • Most patients can return to their regular activities after the treatment.
