Caring for Your Friends’ and Family’s Vein Health

If you have a friend or family member who’s impacted by varicose veins, let them know that treatment options are available.

Though varicose veins are often considered a cosmetic issue, these enlarged, twisted veins can often be quite uncomfortable or develop into more serious conditions. However, even when they don’t, their prominent appearance can make many patients feel uncomfortable, insecure, and embarrassed.

Fortunately, patients with varicose veins or spider veins, a milder version of the same condition — don’t have to live with the risk, discomfort, or embarrassment. A number of non-invasive, effective treatment options are available — though it’s also important to understand the risks and risk factors associated with varicose veins.

Symptoms and Risks of Varicose Veins

Along with the bulging appearance of varicose veins, patients often also experience colour changes in the skin, sores on the legs, a rash, and burning or aching sensations in the legs. In serious cases, varicose veins can cause long-term swelling, which may result in serious skin problems such as ulcers and sores.

In addition, varicose veins can lead to an increased risk of blood clots. In especially severe cases, there’s a significant risk that deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can occur, particularly if the patient is sitting in a car or plane for an extended period of time.

Vein Disease Risk Factors

Some of your friends and family members may be at greater risk of developing varicose veins than others. Genetics play a large role in determining who does and doesn’t develop vein disease; patients whose parents or grandparents have varicose veins are at greater risk of developing them themselves.

In addition, certain lifestyle factors can play a role. For example, patients who are overweight, older, or who smoke tend to have increased pressure in their veins, which can contribute to varicose veins. Other factors include leg injuries or inactivity, pregnancy, or being female. There is also evidence to suggest that taller people are at greater risk of developing varicose veins.
